Most pet owners think of their dogs and cats as best friends, life companions and beloved members of the family.
Their pets return the sentiment with unequivocal love and loyalty. This special bond is what pet ownership is all about.
It’s also why, when a pet becomes sick or injured, owners will go to almost any length to ease their suffering – even if it means breaking the bank.
But a growing number of people are taking the bank-breaking part out of the equation. And they’re doing it by purchasing pet insurance. It’s a way of securing your pet’s health as well as your pocketbook, and it’s catching on fast.

WEIGHING THE COST OF PET INSURANCE

Not many people relish the thought of taking on an extra monthly bill. But if this extra payment could end up saving them thousands of dollars, they start to see things differently. “The technology vets have at their disposal is getting more advanced every day,” says Grant Biniasz, a spokesperson for Veterinary Pet Insurance. “As a result, vet bills are also getting higher. That’s why more and more people are choosing to protect themselves by purchasing pet insurance.”

According to Biniasz, his most eager clients are pet owners that have found themselves in the unenviable position of staring slack-jawed at a monstrous vet bill. These people know firsthand how vet bills can stack up in a hurry, even for something as routine as a fracture or infection. “I don’t think that everyone necessarily needs to have insurance,” says Biniasz. “But people need to have a plan or things can get expensive fast.”

NEW TREATMENTS

Advances in veterinary techniques have come in leaps and bounds; and treatments that were unheard of just a few years ago are now regularly used to diagnose and treat pets all over the country.

Treatments once reserved for humans such as radiation therapy, MRIs and even transplants are now available for animals as well. And veterinary clinics are feeling an increasing need to keep pace with the trend towards more advanced treatment options. The result is an overall hike in the cost of taking your pet to the vet. “We’ve had claims for everything from surgery to remove 15 pacifiers from the digestive tract of an English Bulldog named Lulu, to a full-on kidney transplant,” says Biniasz. The bottom line is that the pet-owner bond is incredibly strong and when a pet gets sick, most owners go for broke to find a cure… sometimes literally. People that love their pets will bring to bear everything modern veterinary science has to offer to make that pet better often without regard to cost, whether it be chemotherapy, an MRI, or reconstructive surgery. These are the people that might want to seriously consider getting their pet insured.

HOW PET INSURANCE WORKS

Pet insurance doesn’t necessarily work like people insurance. Plans allow you to seek treatment for a pet with any doctor, anywhere around the country. All you need to do is fax your insurance provider an itemized receipt from your veterinarian and you will receive your reimbursement.

You can get a coverage plan through most insurance companies for your dog, cat, bird or exotic pet. Plans generally include accidents, surgeries, prescriptions, lab fees and office visits, but can vary depending on the species.

Signing up is easy. You can usually enroll online at a given provider’s website or call their sales center. A lot of people don’t realize many companies maintain relationships with pet insurance agencies and make plans available as a voluntary benefit. “We work with over 2,000 companies, so people should definitely check with their HR departments to see if they’re eligible to get pet insurance under their benefits package,” says Biniasz. “A lot of people are eligible and don’t even realize it, so it’s definitely worth checking.”

PROTECTING YOUR BEST FRIEND…AND YOUR WALLET

Plans usually run between $15 and $25 per month, depending on your level of coverage. That can add up to $2,000 to $6,000 over a pet’s life, so it can be an investment. But, again, those figures can be the cost of one surgery and, even if you have an indoor pet that sleeps all day, you still never know what the future holds.

Lulu the pacifier-eating English Bulldog’s owner Jennifer Zwart says it best. “For six months we thought we were just misplacing pacifiers. I never dreamed that Lulu would need surgery to remove 15 ‘misplaced’ pacifiers lodged in her intestines.” Luckily, Zwart had pet insurance. The price of Lulu’s penchant for pacifiers could have been enough to make her cry.
